Local Crossfit Gym Owners Give Gezzo’s the Thumbs-Up!

Many local people are headed into the gyms this season, ready to shape up after a long holiday season of indulging. It turns out, you don’t have to deprive yourself to get your health under control! We met with Mallory and Cam Erwin, owners of McDonough’s Crossfit Pulse location. They’re both huge Gezzo’s fans, so we thought, who better to get the facts from about healthy eating? Cam’s first, and most emphasized point was this – “Eat real food! Avoiding processed foods is the single most important step to take to turn your health around. Not depriving yourself.” Mallory adds that a great tip for grocery shopping is to try to stick to the outer walls of the store. “Most of the processed stuff is in those middle aisles,” she explains.” “We try to only go in there for seasonings and oils and things like that.”

When asked about eating out, though, it gets a little more limited. Most fast food establishments offerings are filled with processed foods, preservatives, and basically no nutritional value. “When we eat out, it’s almost always Gezzo’s,”, Mallory laughs. Cam agrees. ” You can eat greens, healthy proteins, fish, even broccoli. Oh, and jalapeños, which are good for the digestive system. Basically, you can mix it up any way you like, get tons of nutrition, feel full, and even enjoy your meal.”

Real, fresh, unprocessed food is also more fueling – meaning you’ll go a lot farther on the energy you get from it than you would something less healthy. While we do recommend going easy on the chips (salt can make you retain water), most everything you’ll find at Gezzo’s is packed with good stuff. Mallory gives an example of what an ideal burrito bowl would be for the person who’s looking to get back on a healthy plan. “Light black beans, chicken, spinach, salsa, broccoli, lettuce, pico, olives, jalapeños, pineapple, and cilantro, if you like all that. How can that not satisfy your tastebuds??”
